Light is the opposite of darkness. Light symbolizes all that is good. Darkness all that is evil. Life can look pretty dark these days so Advent invites us to first acknowledge darkness that we might realize how desperately we need light.

A Light to the Ends of the Earth
Around sixty years ago, my parents sailed (literally) from the US to the ends of the earth—the island nation of Papua New Guinea. They did this because they understood that God offers salvation to everyone and they wanted to give God’s Word to some who might otherwise never hear. Likewise, my husband and I answered the same call thirty years after my parents did, moving to Indonesia to share this good news. We understood that God planned from the very beginning to save all peoples, not just the Israelites.
Let Us Walk in the Light
"Needs further explanation" my editor commented in the margin of my book manuscript, "The general public will not understand this phrase even though it's in the Bible." Again and again, she forced me to creatively explain Biblical phrases that seem second nature to Christians. We say them but we might not know what they mean or how to live them out. One of these phrases caused me to pause in my study of Isaiah.
