Evaluating Our Time With God

I recently studied Psalm 19 by King David. The first familiar verses often come to mind when I am gazing out onto a beautiful stretch of creation (The heavens declare the Glory of God). But the bulk of the psalm reminds me that God is more comprehensively revealed in his written revelation. It challenges me to find the scriptures “more valuable than gold and sweeter than honey” (Ps 19:10).

I paused to evaluate the motivation and framework of time with God.

How would you rate your “God-Time”? Is it out of balance?

  • Do you spend time with God more out of HABIT or from a HUNGER to know him?
  • More from DUTY or a DESIRE to be with him?
  • Do you feel GUILT if you miss a day or can you give yourself GRACE when life takes over your schedule?
  • Do you spend more time in RESEARCH than in cultivating your RELATIONSHIP with God?
  • Do you tend to ASK more than you ATTEND to the voice of God?
  • Do you cling to the FAMILIAR in lieu of seeking something FRESH?

I have been married thirty-five years. How sad if my husband and I still related to each other the same way we did at the beginning of our relationship. Likewise, let your relationship with God and his word evolve and grow, keeping some beloved and familiar traditions, while adding new and creative ways to meet with and see God.

I’ll be sharing some of those creative ideas in subsequent posts. Stay tuned.
