For the past few years, I’ve chosen a word for the year. This practice is not magical or profound but simply a way for me to focus on something God lays on my heart. “With” is my word for 2023. What does it mean?

Where do I see this this word and concept in Scripture?

- Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV (Joshua 1:9)
- Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4 NIV
- The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Luke 1:28 NIV
- Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me–put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:9 NIV (2 Corinthians 13:11)
From these verses, I takeaway these truths for my new year:

This year I want to be mindful of God’s Spirit with me in all things, at all times. I also want to grow in my ability to show up and be with others.
What is your word for the year?
PRAYER
Lord, may I become more familiar with the Holy Spirit—his voice, his leading—this year than I have ever been. May I experience you with me and reflect you to others.
I am indebted to Jackie Roese for her thoughts on “with” which helped inform my word of the year. Listen to her podcast.
